Medicaid, sometimes called Healthy Michigan, is a health care program that offers complete health care services to adults and children with low income. Many things affect whether you’re eligible for Medicaid, so if something changes in your life, your eligibility might change, too.
However, you still have options for quality health care coverage. Losing Medicaid or Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) coverage makes you eligible for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP).
Reasons you might lose Medicaid or CHIP eligibility
- A new job with employer-provided health care
- An increase in your household income
- An inheritance of money or property
- Family changes, like marital status
- Moving out of state
- Pregnancy that qualified you for Medicaid is ending
How does a Special Enrollment Period work?
If you lose Medicaid or CHIP coverage, you can enroll in a new plan up to 60 days before your coverage ends to avoid any gaps in coverage.
