Postpartum hypertension: what you should know
Okay mom. As if hearing about the risks of developing hypertension during pregnancy—also known as preeclampsia—didn't get your attention, it's time you understood the risks for postpartum hypertension. Yes, you can develop high blood pressure as the result of your pregnancy, even after baby is born. But, like many conditions brought on by pregnancy, it can be managed. And we want to help you take care of yourself so you're in good health when baby needs you.
So here are the fast facts to help you detect, monitor or manage postpartum hypertension quickly and effectively:
Know if you're high risk.
Certain health conditions and other factors can put you at greater risk of developing postpartum hypertension. These include:
- History of chronic hypertension
- Obesity
- Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes
- Kidney disease
- History of preeclampsia or eclampsia
- Twins or multiple babies
Know the signs and symptoms.
Sometimes postpartum hypertension has no symptoms, but if your blood pressure gets really high, you might experience symptoms ranging from headaches to dizziness to shortness of breath. Some women even experience blurry vision. Swelling of extremities, increased heartbeat, trouble breathing or urinating are all possible symptoms to watch out for, too.
Know when to see the doctor.
Monitoring your blood pressure at home is a great idea, but you'll want to see your provider for a proper diagnosis and treatment. You can use the blood pressure cuff we provided in your PriorityMOM™ welcome gift to monitor your blood pressure and communicate the readings to your provider. They'll likely test your blood or urine and perform a physical exam. They may also order a CT scan or MRI to confirm that you have postpartum hypertension.
Know the signs of an emergency.
If left untreated, high blood pressure can be dangerous to your health. If you experience any of the following, seek medical help right away:
- Sudden swelling in your hands, ankle or face
- Sudden, rapid weight gain
- Trouble breathing, chest pains or irregular heartbeat
- Severe pain in your abdomen
- Experience symptoms of a stroke including dizziness, impaired vision, numbness or drooping of your face or arm, trouble speaking or understanding what others say
- Sudden headache
- Nausea or vomiting
- Seizure
