Priority Health’s maternity management program celebrates two years of supporting moms, babies

(GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — July 6, 2023) On its two-year anniversary, a unique maternity management program offered by Priority Health has found success in helping expectant mothers make healthier decisions, resulting in less emergency care and more preventive action.

Since its launch in summer 2021, PriorityMOM™ has supported more than 1,200 members. The successful program has resulted in a 16% reduction in emergency department visits for mothers who may experience pre- or post-delivery complications. It has also seen a rise in positive behavioral measures, with significant increases across the board in breast pump claims (80%), therapy visits (73%) and glucose testing (29%).

The goal of the program is to walk expectant mothers through their pregnancy, offer support and reduce the total member cost of maternity care, preterm births and postpartum readmissions. Through personalized outreach and education, the program covers a variety of topics including health coverage, hypertension and diabetes management, the importance of wellness visits, infant feeding options and mental health awareness.

“While pregnancy can be a beautiful journey, it is also a time of stressful change, both physically and mentally,” said Karen Meyerson, director of Commercial Care Management at Priority Health. “It is heartwarming and encouraging to see the positive impact the program is having on both mothers and their babies. Priority Health is committed to supporting this program and working alongside members and health providers by offering extra support to help prevent poor outcomes while reducing member cost.”

PriorityMOM™ is open to expectant mothers enrolled in a Priority Health employer-sponsored, individual or Medicaid health plan. In addition to normal prenatal care, members receive personalized information based on their gestational period and educational resources about common pregnancy issues. Members also receive a free blood pressure cuff, baby sleep sack and Byram breast pump.
